Frequently Asked Questions

What is LENS neurofeedback?
LENS (Low Energy Neurofeedback System) is a type of brain optimization that uses photonic electromagnetic signals to disrupt unhelpful patterns in the brain, allowing it the space to self correct. The LENS monitors brain activity in real time and reads it back to your brain to inform it of its present functioning. It’s a gentle, non-invasive process that can help improve mental clarity, mood, focus, and emotional regulation.

How does LENS work?
Small sensors are placed on your scalp or body to read electrical activity. Current activity at the site of the sensor is picked up by an amplifier and read by the LENS software and interprets your brain activity in real time. Then, a faint signal (millions of times weaker than what a cellphone emits) is sent back to skin or scalp. This signal acts like a mirror, helping your brain recognize its present activity and shift out of inefficient patterns on its own.

Who can benefit from the LENS?
Anyone, as young as 3 months old and beyond, at any stage of the lifespan. From high functioning executives to those suffering from chronic pain or illness, LENS can be used to improve central nervous system functioning. LENS has also been used with animals to improve functioning and address unwanted behaviors.
-
What conditions can LENS help with?
LENS does not treat any diagnosis, but rather works by addressing the underlying neurological causes of whatever presenting problem one might experience. It is commonly used for symptoms related to anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma responses, migraines and headaches, sleep issues, chronic pain, inflammation, brain fog, concussions, and traumatic brain injuries (TBI).
-
Is LENS neurofeedback safe?
Yes, it’s considered very safe. There is no electrical stimulation or invasive procedure. Most people tolerate it very well and do not notice anything while receiving feedback.
-
What does a session feel like?
A session is painless and usually brief, lasting anywhere from a few seconds to around 20 minutes. You likely will not feel anything at all during the session. Some people report feeling calmer or more focused afterward.
-
How many sessions of LENS are needed?
Most people notice changes within 1-4 sessions, though full benefits typically take 10-20 sessions. The total number varies on the individual and their goals or underlying neurological functioning. If you have a history of concussions or head injuries, some people may benefit from more than 20 sessions. If you are using LENS to optimize executive functioning, there is no limit to how many LENS sessions you may use. Those suffering from progressive or chronic disease can benefit from ongoing LENS sessions to help increase functioning and quality of life, even if the disease will continue to progress.
-
Is LENS the same as traditional Neurofeedback?
No. LENS is a form of passive, non-traditional Neurofeedback. Traditional Neurofeedback requires the brain to learn through operant conditioning and takes conscious effort, and often far more sessions than LENS. LENS does not require any conscious effort by the person receiving feedback and has been found to be faster, without any side effects. There is no supporting research that suggests LENS is any less effective than traditional Neurofeedback.
-
Are the effects of LENS permanent?
For many people, improvements are long-lasting, especially after completing a full course of sessions. However, some may benefit from occasional maintenance sessions, depending on their unique neurological functioning.
